This broken remnant of an old farm fence has been wittily elevated to the status of an element in an 18th century garden of the Picturesque school, whose designers used such features as ruined buildings and decaying trees to achieve a ‘natural’ effect, though based, as the name suggests, on landscapes seen in contemporary paintings.
