Monotype Workshop

Monotype Without a Press – 13th September 2025

Monotype is an exciting and immediate printing technique which enables the production of unique and expressive prints. The technique is highly accessible to all requiring few materials and tools whilst being widely adaptable to experimental mark making.

The Workshop

This one day workshop, held in Ian Hamilton Finlay’s library at Little Sparta on 13th September 2025, is in direct support of funds to restore those parts of the garden damaged by storm Eowyn. Multi media artist, and garden volunteer, Anne Moar, will demonstrate the different approaches to monotype.  Supported by her, you will have the opportunity to gather inspiration from the garden and resource materials. Then learn to experiment and create several of your own prints.

Key points

  • Suitable for beginners. No art experience is necessary to enjoy this low tech print technique. Although artists working in any media could also enjoy this practice opportunity in the unique setting of Little Sparta.

  • All materials and tools will be provided, apart from photography equipment. A variety pack of 6 A4 quality print papers, suitable for your final prints, will be provided.

  • Beginning in the garden you will take photographs and/or make sketches to inform your printmaking.

  • Anne will give an introduction to monotype and provide resource materials to explore.

  • The approaches of reverse or drawn, subtractive and manipulated monotypes will be modelled before initial exploratory prints are made. Additional papers of various weights will be available for this before you choose the method for your final prints.

  • The possibilities for monotype as part of an extended art practice will be illustrated.

  • As drying time is lengthy, you will learn about protecting your artwork and be given the means to transport them home as safely as possible.

  • Your fee of £80 will support the Little Sparta Storm Eowyn repair fund, and includes access to the garden on the day.
