Liberty, Equality, Eternity, 1793

Set on sombre grey stone plinths along the wall of the house are four simple columns. They bear a single inscription each – Liberty Equality Eternity 1793 . The first two words immediately indicate the French Revolution, but the change from Fraternity to Eternity is explained by the date – 1793 was the year in which the Committee of Public Safety resolved to make Terror the means of preserving the Revolution, thus sending thousands to eternity at the guillotine.
