Fly Navy

Fly Navy, the last work in The Villa D’Este series, a British Phantom Jet, ties together the marine and airborne elements. It bears a star emblem and 105 NAVY in blue on each side and lies flat on its plinth, as if skimming over – or about to sink into – the sea. The phrase Fly Navy was used in an advertising campaign for the Fleet Air Arm in the 1970s, and this work combines pathos with a certain jaunty bravado.
